Was a rural mail carrier and resided on Vernon street in Sulligent, Al. Enjoyed hunting and fishing and hept a boat at the Sulligent, Lake. Spent many hours fishing with his grandchildren. Buried at the Sulligent City Cemetery. Info obtained from Sid Hill on the Charles Roy Norton family.

Graduated from Livingston State Teachers College and taught elementary school in Lamar County. Was a young school teacher when she married Charles Roy Norton. Was active in the Mail Carriers Auxiliary, in the Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Notes for THOMAS JESSE TAYLOR NORTON:

Jett was born and grew up in the Pine Springs Community north of Sulligent in

Lamar County, Alabama. He atttended agricultural school in Hamilton, Alabama ,

worked on the railroad in Georgia. He then came back to Sulligent where he

married Mary Etta Turman.

Jett and Etta rented land and farmed a few years, then acquired his home place where

they continued farming and were involved in community and church activities. They

were members of and atttended the Pine springs United Methodist Church, where

he taught sunday school in his later years. He was involved in the Pine Springs

Elementary School, where his children attended and he served as trustee. He also

carried people to see a doctor or the hospital, when they did not have transportation.

At that time, the nearest hospital was in Amory, Mississippi. Jett also owned a

sawmill and sawmilled between planting and gathering season. During the winter,

he was a buyer of raw fur in a territory that carried him into Pickens, Green And

Sumter Counties in Alabama and nto Mississippi. Some of the furs were carried to

Memphis Tennessee for sale. Etta was busy caring for their eight children.

Attended Pine Springs Elementary School near Sulligent, AL. Attended Sulligent High School until he was called into service in the U.S. Air Corps on July 6, 1942. Trained at Miami Beach, Florida and Greensboro, North Carolina, embarked June 1944 serving European Theatre. Her returned to the states February 19, 1946 and was discharged February 23, 1946 at Fort McPherson, Gerogia as Staff Sergeant. George earned the 63 American Theatre Ribbon, European African Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory ribbon, Marksman and Carbine Badge.

Owned & Operated Tishomingo Grain & Elevator until his death. Died in Baptist Memorial Hosptial in Memphis, TN. Funeral services were held in Tishomingo United Methodist church, where he was a member. Was preceded in death by a three year old son.
