This week our feature is the Pine Springs Cemetery located T13S, R15W, Sec7, north of Sulligent, Alabama in the Pine Springs Community. This listing was done by Mrs. Dorothy Norton Northington of Detroit, AL. Before we get to the list, let me tell you a little about Mrs. Dorothy, she grew up in this community, her parents were Thomas Jesse Taylor ( Jett ) Norton( born 3/5/1885, died 12/16/1958), he was the son of Charles Berry Norton ( born 11/4/1844; died 2/28/1915 ) and Beady Abigale Taylor Norton ( born 7/10/1842, died 8/15/1916) .Jett was born and also grew up in the Pine Springs Community . He atttended agricultural school in Hamilton, Alabama , worked on the railroad in Georgia, then came back to Sulligent where he married Mary Etta Turman,( born 9/16/1895, died 6/20/1974.) on 5/3/1914. Mary Etta was the daughter of George Jay Turman, ( born 3/8/1871, died 10/8/1912) and Martha Ann Carden ( born 10/14/1871, died 2/5/1952). Jett and Etta rented land and farmed a few years, then acquired his home place where they continued farming and were involved in community and church activities. They were members of and atttended the Pine Springs United Methodist Church, where he taught sunday school in his later years. He was involved in the Pine Springs Elementary School, where his children attended and he served as trustee. He also carried people to see a doctor or the hospital, when they did not have transportation. At that time, the nearest hospital was in Amory, Mississippi. Jett also owned a sawmill and sawmilled between planting and gathering season. During the winter, he was a buyer of raw fur in a territory that carried him into Pickens, Green and Sumter Counties in Alabama and into Mississippi. Some of the furs were carried to Memphis Tennessee for sale. Etta was busy caring for their eight children during this time.

Children of Jett and Etta were: Madeline Norton Spence , Dorothy Nell Norton Northington, George Herman Norton ( born 9/17/1921, died 10/30/1976); Martha Frances Norton Otts ( born 6/12/1923, died 5/30/1992 ); Virginia Norton Pitts, James Roland Norton ( born 7/22/1928, died 11/29/1995 ); T. J. Norton, Jr. ( born 5/29/1930, died 2/23/1994 ); and Annie Mae Norton Davis

Mrs. Dorothy attended Pine Springs Grammar School in Pine Springs Community north of Sulligent, AL and graduated from Sulligent High School. She attended what was then, Florence State Teachers College, Florence, AL Mrs. Dorothy has just recently retired from the Postal Service in Detroit with over 30 years service. Her husband is Hilrid Northington, a well known farmer and citizen of Lamar County. She and Mr. Hilrid have two sons, Michael and Harry; a daughter in law, Elizabeth "Libby"; five grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Emily, Lyle, Michael Lynn and Scott; two great grandchildren, Brittney Elizabeth and Brandon Holt. On August 19th, Mrs. Dorothy will be celebrating a birthday, one that I hope will be the best one yet! I’m not telling you her age, but if you were to see her, and didn’t know, you would never guess just how many years she has seen pass by! Happy Birthday !

The Pine Spring Cemetery is a restful place, remember I told you that I love cemeteries. A list is available that contains data taken from the cemetery in addition to personal notes added by Mrs. Dorothy. This listing begins on the northeast section with her family and proceeds west. An effort was made to link families. Linking was done to aid persons researching family history. Any omissions or errors in data was not intentional. There are a number of unmarked graves and markers that are not legible. Mrs. Northington stated "There are not adequate words to express the connection with your past when doing a project such as this. As I moved from grave to grave, I remembered so many things that my parents, Jett and Etta Norton, had told me, when I was younger. The experience was overwhelming to say the least." A copy of this listing will be placed in local librarys in the near future.
